When Isabella turned 2 we thought it was time to get her more involved in all things related to our next trips. This includes talking a lot about the places we were going to visit and let her know how much time until the big day comes. That’s when we thought about making a vacation countdown calendar.
Around 20 days before our departure day we take a colored cardboard paper and write the name of our next destination and the days to go until we get to the most excitng moment of the calendar: the big day! In Portuguese we write “É Hoje!” which means “It’s Today!”
And to cover the days that go by we print pictures of the place we are going to, which is perfect to make Isabella more familiar with what she’s going to see. Our first calendar was for a trip to Disney in Orlando, so we printed pictures of characters and the parks. If we are going to a big city, New York for example, we choose points of interest that she will definetly see, like the Statue of Liberty and Times Square.
Our countdown calendars are usually long because we usually plan our trips in advance. But if we decide on a last minute trip, no problem, we take a A4 paper and make a very short countdown.
Nowadays we also use the cellphone countdown (we use Big Day Lite), but nothing compares to the joy of placing the pictures and when the day comes we all scream: É hoje!!! (It’s today!!!)
How about you? Do you make vacation countdown calendars? If not, start on your next trip, even if it’s a weekend getaway! Your kids will love it! And so will you 🙂
