When we realized this Microwave Simple Syrup recipe was the perfect way to sweeten coffee or any other cold beverage, we never went back to just using sugar!

I have to be honest. I had no idea simple syrup even existed before last year! Here in Brazil you don't find it in stores, probably because nobody ever uses it. And I don't know a single person here who makes it at home. But since our trip to New England last year we fell in love with it.

Most coffee shops we went on the trip had the option of simple syrup and regular sugar to sweeten beverages, so we started giving the syrup a try, and we just couldn't stop using it!

🤔 Where to use it?

How come we had never figured it was the perfect way to sweeten cold drinks? No more sugar on the bottom of the cup or having to stir iced coffee or tea for minutes before having it!

We love iced coffee, and this is probably a liking we acquired on a trip to the USA, since here in Brazil when people think of cold coffee they think of the coffee that has been sitting around for some time. And to be honest - that is not a good coffee!

So when we say we like iced coffee, some people really do look in disbelief - and disgust, no kidding. For a tropical and mostly warm climate country, coffee here is drank strong and hot, very hot!

But there is something so refreshing about a cup of iced coffee that is even hard to describe. We think it is the perfect way to refuel your energies on a hot day.

So when we got home from that trip we started making our own simple syrup to use on coffee and iced tea! It's so easy to make and you can store it in the fridge for quite some time.

📋 What is simple syrup made of?

The ingredients of simple syrup are sugar and water. Just that.

So, simple syrup is made of equal parts of water and sugar that is boiled until sugar dissolves.

🍳 How do you make it from scratch?

Just place equal parts of water and sugar in a microwave safe container (we use 1/2 cup of each). Mix it and microwave it for around two and a half minutes.

  • You can also place ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat and stir until sugar is dissolved.

⌛ How long does homemade simple syrup last?

You could leave your simple syrup at room temperature for up to a week but you should keep it in the fridge and it lasts for up to a month.

As you could see, making this Microwave Simple Syrup recipe is so easy! And it is so much easier than than just adding sugar to the beverage!
