Glazed Orange Bundt Cake

Orange is not one of my favorite flavors when it comes to cakes and desserts. But I do love the fruit! And orange juice! But one of these days I changed my opinion with this recipe!

🤔 What makes it a bundt cake?

A bundt cake is a cake that is baked in a bundt pan, shaping it into a distinctive shape. The shape is inspired by a traditional European cake called Gugelhupf, but bundt cakes are not associated with any specific flavor or recipe.

📋 Ingredients

For this orange bundt cake you'll need:

  • butter
  • sugar
  • egg
  • orange zest
  • all-purpose flour
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • milk

And for the glaze:

  • powdered sugar
  • water
  • orange zest

Equipment

This recipe is good for a 6 cup bundt pan. If you have a 12 cup pan, you can double the recipe and leave the cake a little longer in the oven.

🧈 How to prepare a bundt cake pan?

Even if you have a bundt cake pan that says it's nonstick it is a good idea to grease it.

  • Start by melting some butter and, with a pastry brush, brush the bundt cake pan, making sure to get into the details of the pan.
  • Now it's time to coat with flour. Add about 1/4 cup of flour and sprinkle it in the pan and start shaking and turning the bundt pan, so that the flour coats the insides of the pan, including all crevices and details.
  • Turn the pan around and start shaking and patting it gently on the bottom and on the sides to remove the excess flour. You could also cover the bundt pan with plastic wrap and shake to coat. Then invert the bundt pan and dump the excess flour onto the plastic wrap before discarding.

🍳 How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 350F (180C).
  • Prepare bundt cake pan.
  • With an electric mixer, beat butter, sugar and orange zest in a large bowl.
  • Add egg and continue beating.
  • In another bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Stir flour mixture and milk alternately into butter mixture. Stir until mixture is no longer lumpy.
  • Pour batter in pan and bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in widest part of the cake comes out clean.
  • Let cake cool completely before removing from pan.

For glaze:

  • Mix all ingredients in a bowl and drizzle glaze on top of the cake.

💭 Tips and Thoughts

The recipe calls for cow's milk - and you can use any. I have not used any other milk (animal or vegetable), so I can't really tell if a soy or almond milk would cause any kind of problem. I suppose it could change the flavor though.

On the orange bundt cake, I have made it twice and both times I cannot get the cake to turn out of the pan. I used baking spray throughly the first time, the time after that I used crisco. The cake is delicious, I just want to know how you get the cake to turn out without sticking. Do you butter and flour your pan?

      Hi Marcy,
      What a pitty!
I use baking spray and I wait until the cake is cool to remove from the pan.
If you make it again, please let me know how it turns out!

This cake is awesome but it is certainly not enough batter for a regular bundt cake pan. I triple the recipe. It is tricky to get out of the pan but I've had luck with putting it in the fridge after it bakes to make the cake contract from the pan. It is really good, reminds me of a cake version of an orange scone from panera!

      Hi Lindsay,
I was so surprised you had to triple the recipe. My bundt cake pan looks so normal 🙂
But I'm glad that you liked the recipe!
      Thanks for stopping by,
      Andrea

I agree, most recipes call for more milk and more eggs and flour. Serving size for 16 fits my bundt pan better. Tastes good though!
