It might sound presumptuous, but this is the best Banana Pudding you will have, and it is much better than the one from Magnolia Bakery.
Last year we traveled to Texas and had the best Banana Pudding of our lives at Two Bros BBQ in San Antonio. When we got back home we had to make one it as similar as possible to that, and I think we nailed it!

🤐 The secret ingredient
But don't think it was that easy. We found many recipes on the internet, tried a few, but they were not as good. The person that served us at Two Bros mentioned the recipe had a secret ingredient and we knew that this ingredient was the key element to make the best banana pudding.
And then we thought: what is the ingredient that makes all sweets taste amazing? Of couse, sweetened condensed milk!!!!
📋 Ingredients
To make this amazing banana pudding you will need:
- sweetened condensed milk
- egg yolks
- vanilla pudding mix
- milk
- bananas
- heavy cream
- sugar
- vanilla wafers
🍳 How to make the Best Banana Pudding?
- First you will make the vanilla pudding by placing the sweetened condensed milk and egg yolks in a pan over medium heat and stir until it thickens.
- Then you will add the vanilla pudding mix and mix well.
- Pour milk and stir until mixture boils, let this mixture boil for 2 minutes.
- Set aside, cover with plastic wrap and lei it cool completely.
- For the whipping cream you just have to whip whipping cream and sugar with a mixer until firm.
- And to assemble this dessert you will work in layers of vanilla pudding, sliced bananas and vanilla wafers.
🍌 Is this Banana Pudding better than Magnolia Bakery's?
Yes! I have no doubt about it! In February we traveled to NYC and tried the famous Banana Pudding from Magnolia Bakery and, let me tell, it was disappointing.
The bananas were mushy, the wafers were soggy, the pudding was not as sweet and the vanilla flavor pretty faint. Sorry for being so honest Magnolia Bakery!
The banana pudding you make with this recipe is much, much better! Even if it sits on the fridge until the next day! The bananas will remain firm, the wafers will not get all soggy (you will be able to feel them), it has the right amount of sweetness and the vanilla flavor is great!
For perfection, use this recipe for homemade vanilla wafers and bananas that are just enough ripe.
📖 Recipe
Banana Pudding
Ingredients
- 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 package vanilla pudding mix
- 2 cups milk
- 3 large bananas
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 1/2 cups vanilla wafers
Instructions
Vanilla Pudding
- Place sweetened condensed milk and egg yolks in a pan over medium heat.
- Keep stiring until it thickens (about 5 minutes).
- Add the vanilla pudding mix and mix well.
- Pour milk and stir until mixture boils.
- Let mixture boil for 2 minutes, don't stop stiring.
- Remove from heat, set aside and let it cool.
- Then cover with plastic wrap. The plastic wrap should touch the mixture so it doesn't form a skin.
Whipping Cream
- Whip whipping cream and sugar in a mixer until soft peaks form.
Assembling
- We used a 10inch wide/4inch deep bowl to assemble, working in layers, from the bottom to the top as follows:
- 1st layer: a third of the cooled vanilla pudding
- 2nd layer: 1 and 1/2 sliced bananas
- 3rd layer: 1 cup vanilla wafers roughly crumbled
- 4th layer: one third whipped cream
- 5th layer: one third of cooled vanilla pudding
- 6th layer: 1 and 1/2 sliced bananas
- 7th layer: 1 cup vanilla wafers roughly crumbled
- 8th layer: one third whipped cream
- 9th layer: final third vanilla pudding
- 10th layer: final third whipped cream
- 11th layer: 1/4 cup vanilla wafers roughly crumbled + 1/4 cup whole vanilla wafers
- Place it in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours, until chilled
