When I don't know what to cook I very often rely on this recipe for a weeknight dinner! We always have canned tomatoes at home and usually have everything else. And even when we don't have one or two ingredients, we make it anyway!
What are the ingredients of a tomato sauce?
This specific recipe has tomatoes (canned), onion, garlic, celery and carrot. You don't find these last 2 ingredients in many tomato sauce recipes, but I think they make all the difference! Olive oil is very important here, but sometimes, if I want a different taste I use butter.
How do you make tomato sauce?
I think that tomato sauce is one of the easiest things to make! Just cook the onion and garlic (celery and carrot if using) with olive oil, add the tomatoes, season with some salt and pepper and let it simmer to bring out the flavors. Yes, it's that simple! Quick and Easy Pasta with Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 11oz (300g) pasta (fusilli, penne or any other you like)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 stick celery chopped (optional, but recommended)
- 1 medium carrot chopped (optional, but recommended)
- 1 can 28oz (800g) tomatoes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tsp sugar if needed
- Grated Parmesan cheese for serving
Instructions
- In a medium pan heat the olive oil. Add onion, garlic, celery and carrot. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes and add tomatoes. Put some salt and pepper and bring to a boil. If sauce is a little acid, add the sugar. Let sauce simmer for around 15 minutes, stiring from time to time.
- When sauce is simmering get a large pot and heat water for the pasta. Add some oil and salt and cook according to package instructions.
- Divide pasta in 4 plates and pour sauce on top of pasta. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese and serve.
