Lehmeyun (or Lahmahjoon) is a round, thin piece of dough (like a flatbread) topped with a mixture of ground beef, onions, tomatoes and some spices. It's sometimes called Armenian pizza. Learn here how to make it!
We have an Uruguayan friend (but she's been living in Brazil for a really long time) and in one of our dinners at her house she made Lehmeyun! I told her I would like to share the recipe and she not only sent me the recipe but also explained a little about the influence of Armenian cuisine in Uruguay.
According to her, after the First World War many Armenians came to South America, especially to Uruguay. They ended up staying there, most of them in the capital, Montevideo. And Lehmeyun (also Lahmahjoon) became a traditional Uruguayan dish!
But what is exactly Lehmeyun?
Sometimes called Armenian pizza, it is a round, thin piece of dough (like a flatbread) topped with a mixture of ground beef, onions, tomatoes and some spices. I checked on the internet and many people eat it like pizza, but at Susana's house we always eat it making a roll, like a burrito. And always with some squeezed lime on top!
What ingredients will you need to make this Armenian pizza?
To make Lehmeyun you'll need ground beef, olive oil, onions, garlic, tomatoes, green bell pepper, salt and pepper, Tabasco sauce, fresh parsley, lime and flatbread (you can use pita bread, naan and ever flour tortillas)
How to make Lehmeyun?
In a pan heat the oil over medium heat, add onions, garlic cloves and cook until golden brown. Add the ground beef and cook for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, green pepper, cook and stir once in a while until the green bell pepper is cooked. Add salt, pepper and tabasco sauce to taste. When mixture is ready, add the chopped parsley, let it cool a little and then put the mixture in a food processor and mix until everything is finelly chopped, but not like a spread.
To assemble the Lehmeyun you have to spread a generous portion of this mixture on each flatbread and take them to the oven for 2-3 minutes. Squeeze some lime juice on top and eat up!
