Here I'll teach you an Evaporated Milk Recipe to make at home! It's very easy to make and it's ready in 2 minutes! But I'll also show you a more traditional way to make homemade evaporated milk.
Evaporated milk is not easy to find here in Brazil, so, like sour cream, we have to make it at home.
But since I learned how to make it, I'm totally fine with not having the store-bought option!
What is evaporated milk?
Evaporated milk is made by removing about 60 percent of the water from ordinary milk, and it can be made from whole milk or skim milk.
What's the difference between evaporated milk and condensed milk?
First, condensed milk and sweetened condensed milk are the same thing and it's basically evaporated milk with a lot of sugar added. And, as I said just above, evaporated milk is made by removing about 60 percent of the water from ordinary milk, and no sugar is added to it.

This recipe is more of a substitute for evaporated milk and you just need water and powdered milk. Mix them well and that's it!
Traditional Method
You can make evaporated recipe by using the traditional method: add milk to a saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it comes to a simmer, turn down the heat to low medium, stir occasionally until it is reduced down to about 1 + 1/4 cups of liquid (around 30 minutes).

I don't think what you made is evaporated milk, more like a "no condensed" kind of condensed milk.
To make evaporated milk you need to remove 60% water content from the milk by cooking, which takes a lot of time and mess.
Ted Mann
You are adding back 40% of the water to the dry milk. Same thing in reverse.
Lori
The directions under the heading "this recipe" say powdered sugar, rather than powdered milk—
