If by any chance you go to Gramado (Southern Brazil), here are some tips on what to do, eat and where to stay!

Gramado is a very touristic city in Southern Brazil. It was settled by German and Italian immigrants and you can see that mostly in its architecture and gastronomy.

The city is about 2 hours by car from where I live (Porto Alegre), so I grew up going there. Gramado is very popular among Brazilians but you'll see people from all over the world visiting it. So if by any chance you go to Gramado, here are some tips on what to do, eat and where to stay!

Places to Visit

Lago Negro: it means dark lake and this is a big area rounded with trees, a lake and hydrangeas. You can take a walk or go for a ride on a paddle boat.

Mini Mundo: it means mini world and there you'll find miniatures of different cities, monuments and castles from around the world. The details are amazing!

Downtown:  the most famous avenue is Borges de Medeiros and there you'll find many stores, restaurants and cafés.

Chocolate Stores: Gramado is known for its chocolate, but not only because of its taste, but for everything they do with chocolate. Go and you will understand what I'm saying 🙂

Praça das Comunicações: right by the bus station, the main reason to go there is to see (and taste) delicious bread and cucas (similar to crumb cakes) made right there, in brick ovens.

What to eat

Gramado is know for café colonial, which is a meal with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juices, cakes, pies, pastries, and much more. When I was a child we used to go to these places a lot, but nowadays I prefer something more like the afternoon tea offered at Ritta Höppner Hotel.

Another thing you may not leave without eating is the fondue. Restaurants usually serve a sequence of all-you-can-eat cheese, meat and chocolate fondue. Prices range and so do quality.

Where to stay

Last time we went to Gramado we stayed at Wish Serrano Hotel and enjoyed a lot. Other options that I think are nice include Laghetto Stilo Hotel, Ritta Höppner Hotel, Alpestre Hotel, and Casa da Montanha Hotel. For more hotels in Gramado click here.

As you can see from the picture above (hotel breakfast) Gramado hotels are known for having amazing breakfast buffets. You can even consider not having lunch 🙂

Well, I hope you find these travel tips useful! If you are going to Gramado, you are probably going to Canela as well, so take a look at some things to do in Canela!
