I know that a Patty Melt is not the best looking sandwich, but it tastes so good! The combination of the rye bread with the caramelized onions and everything else that goes on this sandwich is incredible 🙂

🥪 What is a Patty Melt made of?
A Patty Melt is made of sliced rye bread, caramelized onions, a hamburger patty and cheese. And it's usually served with a Thousand Island dressing.
🤔 What's it different than a cheeseburger?
I've read somewhere that a patty melt is a cross between a grilled cheese and a hamburger. And that's what it is!
From the grilled cheese you get the sliced bread and the oozing cheese. And from the hamburger you get the burger patty. And the caramelized onions? Well, it is found in burgers too and it's a very important ingredient in the Patty Melt!
🍳 How to make it
First: the caramelized onions
- In a medium skillet melt 2 tbsp of butter over medium low heat.
- Add the sliced onion and fry, mixing every other minute until golden brown.
Second: the patty
- Place the ground beef, salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl.
- Mix well and make 3 patties (each one a little larger than the size of the bread).
- In another skillet melt the remaining butter and fry the hamburger patties to your liking.
- Remove patties from the skillet, save some of the fat and with a paper towel clean the skillet.
Third: assembling
For each sandwich take one slice of bread then place over it one slice of cheese, one hamburger patty and 1/3 of the onion. Then another slice of cheese and finally another slice of bread.
Return the fat you saved from before back to the skillet and grill the sandwiches on both sides until bread is golden brown. Serve with Thousand Island dressing.
Take a look at the Thousand Island dressing recipe here on the blog. It's so good, so easy to make and much better than store-bought!
