We believe that the best way to get to know Rome is by walking. At night, the streets become a bit quieter, restaurants and bars come to life, and the lighting adds extra charm to the ordinary buildings, monuments, and famous places.
If you travel in winter it will get dark early (around 6 or 7 p.m) and it will be easier to explore Rome at night (in summer it gets dark very late). Last time we were in Rome we strolled at night through all the main attractions we had visited during the day, and there was one night, our last night there, when we went for a walk without a specific destination, just to savor a bit more of the city.
Well, you may ask: Is it safe to walk around Rome at night? We felt safe! Of course, we stayed in the tourist areas of the historic center, Trastevere, and near the Vatican, where there was always some activity. But we saw several people walking alone, and no one seemed concerned about safety.
As in much of Europe, the issues there are pickpockets and scams (be attentive if someone bumps into you, gets too close, offers you something, and so on, as they may be trying to distract you while attempting to steal from you).
Well, let's get to what matters then: strolling through Rome at night!
